Innsbruck - A short Guide

Innsbruck is located in the South West of Austria, just 2 hours away from both Salzburg and Munich and is surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Alps. The city is located quite high up and as such has a continental climate - with snow almost guaranteed to fall every winter. The old town is the very face of Austria, it oozes charm with its centuries old buildings like the Imperial court and the Imperial Church and of course the Inn bridge from which the town takes its name. The Golden Roof is a unique balcony with a gold roof that made up of 2,738 gold-plated copper tiles and is well worth a visit. It is widely regarded as Innsbruck’s most famous symbol and as you’ll see is a beautiful site and highly photogenic. It was originally made as a royal box for Emperor Maximillian I in the early 15th century so that the Emperor could enjoy the tournaments in the square below.

If you’d like to take a look at the history and culture at the heart of Austria, then you should head to one of the city’s museums. The most notable of them are the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum, Tiroler Landesmuseum and the Tiroler Museumsbahnen. There’s also the Swarovski building that has a number of design rooms and an exhibition space called the Chamber of Wonder alongside eye-candy creations like the crystal stairs and the Cascade Chandelier. If you prefer to tour the architecture of the city, then there are a number of beautiful churches, historic buildings and an impressive tower in the Old City. The tower is especially nice as, from the top, it offers incredible views out over the city. The Cathedral at Saint Jacob is also well worth a visit. It is a Baroque styled cathedral with a wonderful facade that includes 2 towers and oval windows and pretty gardens to the front.
