Tallinn Airport
Tallinn Airport

Tallinn airport is located just 5km outside of the city centre of Tallinn on the Eastern Shore of Lake Ülemiste and is an ideal entry point for a visit to Estonia. Tallinn itself is home to some of the most wondrous architecture in Eastern Europe, with its fairytale like old town alongside a thriving metropolitan business centre, and a mixture of European and Baltic cultures that is quite unlike anywhere else. Just a little while outside of Tallinn, you’ll find numerous villages and places of interest such as Kadriorg Palace which is a rare example of Petrine Baroque architecture, usually found almost exclusively in St. Petersburg, Russia, and built for Catherine I by Peter the Great. With a car hire at Tallinn airport, you can easily explore all of this and much more all at the comfort of your own pace.

  • Tallinn airport was built in 1932 and the first flights to be operated from the airport were Tallinn to Stockholm and Tallinn to Riga
  • The airport sees approximately 2 million passengers pass through its terminals each year
  • The full name of Tallinn Airport is Meri Tallinn International Airport

Tallinn Airport - A short Guide

There are a number of ways to get to Tallinn, but if you’re coming from mainland Europe or the rest of the world, it’s most likely that you’ll arrive at Tallinn International Airport. It’s located just 5km from the city centre on the shore of Lake Ülemiste, is Estonia’s main and biggest airport and it is a base for the country’s own Estonian Air which flies to a variety of international destinations, including London, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. Some of the other airlines operating from the airport include Air Baltic, Finnair, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Easyjet, flying between destinations such as Riga, Munich, London, Liverpool, Dublin, Manchester, Bremen and Barcelona. You’ll find a number of car rental providers at the airport including Avis, Sixt, Budget and Europcar but as the airport is quite busy, we’d recommend that you compare all of these online now, using our car rental comparison search. In the airport you’ll find all the usual modern conveniences including duty free, restaurants, fashion stores and a specialist ‘Goods of Estonia‘ store, where you can pick up a last minute Estonian themed souvenir or gift.

Once you’ve left the airport, you’ll find that you’re just a short drive from Tallinn. Take the E263 road from the airport directly tot he city centre - it should take less than 10 minutes in clear traffic. Once you’re in the city, you’ll have a number of options for travel, including bus and taxi, but by far the most convenient way to travel is to do so by car. Use our simple search feature now to compare all the best car rental deals at Tallinn Airport and remember to book ahead to get the best price. When you’re exploring the city, you should remember that the old town of Tallinn is off limits to cars, so if you intend to explore the beautiful age-old Hanseatic architecture there, remember you’ll have to do so by foot. This isn’t a problem though, as walking the medieval streets lends a certain charm and atmosphere that would otherwise be lost, and if you get tired, don’t worry, there are plenty of fantastic little bars and restaurants to explore while you get your energy back.

If you’re travelling onwards from Tallinn, then you can easily go on to many other Baltic countries from Tallinn Airport, or if you prefer you can take a train between Tallinn and Moscow or St. Petersburg, busses between Tallinn and other Estonian cities as well as Riga, Vilnius and St. Petersburg and ferries that from the Tallinn port to Helsinki. Though if you really want to explore all that Estonia has to offer, then a road trip across the country would be ideal. From Tallinn you could travel East to the Lahemaa National Park, to Narva and the Russian border and then south to Peipsi lake and the Capital of Culture Tartu. From there you could even drive into Latvia, the choices are endless. When you book your car, make sure you explore any extras you might need, such as GPS or even a car with cruise control, and use Car Rentals Network to compare and book hundreds of different car rental deals at Tallinn airport.
