Spain - The Facts

  • Spain is a large country - it’s ideal for a road trip. In fact it’s the second largest country in Western Europe and is a whopping five times bigger than the United Kingdom.

  • Madrid, the capital of Spain, is the greenest capital in Europe and enjoys more sun filled days than any other country in Europe.

  • Spanish is the main language of Spain but there are some dialects that are recognised too which include: Aranese: spoken mostly in the Pyrenean comarca of the Aran Valley in North West Catalonia, Basque: spoken in the Basque country, and Galician which is spoken in Galicia. We recommend at least learning some basics of Spanish to get you by - which may also make the locals a little more endearing towards you should you need help or information.

  • Almost all of Spain is Roman Catholic - which amongst other things means you’ll be able to explore many beautiful churches scattered across the cities and countryside in equal measure.

  • The most famous dish that Spain has produced is Paella which originated near lake Albufera in Valencia. Head there to sample somf of the best in Spain. But if you’re on the look out for something to help cool you down on those hot sunny days then Gezpacho soup, which is a vegetable soup that is served cold, should be ideal.

Spain - a Short Guide

Set on the Iberian Peninsula in South West Europe, Spain is one of the larger European country’s and is bordered by France to the North, Portugal and the Atlantic ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. For the island hoppers, you’ll find love at the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands - home to incredibly beautiful beaches and lengths of dreamy Mediterranean vistas. Perfect for beach holidays and those seeking a little adventure or relaxation in the sun.

The country is of course, much like the rest of Europe, something of a tourist Mecca, and is visited mostly for the Mediterranean climate and coastlines. It became a popular tourist destination in the 1980’s with visitors coming from every corner of Europe and the UK on package holidays. These days however, the cities are just as an important slice of Spain’s tourism with cities like Valencia providing a modern take on architecture and providing a thriving arts scene and regular festivals such as the Fallas festival.

In the south of Spain, the capital of Andalusia, Seville tops the attractions list with its buzzing nightlife, famed attractions like the Medieval cathedral and the Alcazar of Seville which is the oldest royal palace that is still in use in Europe. Also in southern Spain, the incredible Alhambra that sits on a plateau overlooking Granda is a 14th century palace that is one of the finest examples of Moorish architecture and engineering. A must see for any fan of architecture or Spain’s past. While in the North of Spain, perhaps the country’s most famed city, Barcelona offers tourists a chance to explore historic architecture including Gaudi’s Casa Batllo and the Sagrada Familia Church, eclectic shopping, a vibrant nightlife and colourful culture all side by side.

Perhaps one of the best places to explore Spain when travelling by car is Madrid. It’s located in the centre of the country and is surrounded by other cities and towns of interest, ideal for exploring from the comfort of your car. Close by you’ll find the village of Manzanares el Real with the wonderful castle of Mendoza that overlooks the Pedriza hills, the Meson de Candido in Segovia, Toledo and Avila which has a small city feel with small bars and romantic restaurants as well as attractions like the convent of Santa Teresa and the Romanesque Cathedral.
