When you visit an island such as Mallorca, it’s likely that hiring a car is one of the last things on your mind, but what you don’t realise in that case is that Mallorca is an island of many contrasts. It is enriched with beautiful and enchanting scenery, expansive dreamy coastlines and incredible architecture like the Gothic Catedral in Palma de Mallorca, which comes complete with stunning interior features that were designed by Antonio Gaudi. Without a car, it would be next to impossible to explore the vast expanses of Mallorca - the largest island in all of Spain.

Mallorca - The Facts

• The capital of Mallorca, Palma is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic islands.
• The population of Mallorca, despite its size and popularity is still less than 1 million people.
• La Balanguera, Mallorca’s national anthem, is in fact an adaptation of a children’s poem about spiders.
• The La Seu is one of the most important historical sites on the island. The huge cathedral was built on a mosque
between 1229 and 1601.
• The little known phenomenon that is Olive tourism is alive and kicking on the island as the island has become
rather famous for its olive mills and groves, many of which have been converted into museums.
• The island is also well known for producing good quality grapes - utilising everything from Syrah to Merlot and
Moscatel in their wines. The most well known of the island’s wine regions is Bodega. Make sure you order local wines in the 4000+ restaurants on the island - and don’t be afraid to ask for a recommendation if you’re unsure what to pair with the local fare.

Mallorca - A Short Guide

There isn’t much that you can’t experience in Mallorca including of course the obvious things: awe-inspiring sun drenched vistas out over the picture perfect Mediterranean sea, white sand beaches, dewy mountain peaks and rolling green countryside, is all there in spades alongside attractive villages, charming cities and dense metropolises like the capital: Palma de Mallorca. A rental car in Mallorca will make this all the more accessible. You could start your journey in the capital, explore the Catedral, the baroque churches, museums and elegant restaurants that provide the perfect ending for a romantic evening with a loved one.

If you’re a fan of cycling, you could even strap your bikes to your car and head out to Alcudia which provides a perfect combination of cycling and beach side relaxation. Those travelling with families could then head to the north of the island to one of the family friendly beach resorts like Puerta Pollensa, while those willing to explore and get their feet dirty could traverse the Tramuntana mountains to find the Monastery of Lluc, or just take in the breathtaking sites out over the island.

There are beaches a plenty in Mallorca, and you can easily adventure around them all if you have the time, and you’ll find nothing but white sands, crystal clear waters and other sun seekers. The beaches in Palma are generally very busy, as one would expect of the capital, but if you don’t mind travelling a little further out of town to the Palma bus station Illets, you will find the simply named Playa, which is a quaint but beautiful little cove. There are others scattered around the area too - so feel free to explore until you find your perfect place. Other beaches of note include the Magaluf beach, in Magaluf, a small coastal village in the municipality of Calvia, and perhaps the most beautiful beach on the entire island: Cala Llombards, on the Southeast coast. This small cove is home to translucent emerald waters, white sands and picturesque Pine trees draping over to form a frame to the waters. This is the kind of beach that lets you laze back and enjoy true island life in quiet serenity.

It’s also a good spot if you have kids, as the waters are shallow and inviting, while the beachside bar offers up a never ending supply of cold beers, fantastic seafood dishes and ambient music. Its pure bliss, but getting there can be a little tricky - but easy if you have a rental car - simply take the MA-6100 out of Santanyi and exit the roundabout to Llombards.

Reaching Mallorca couldn’t be easier. With the island’s immense popularity, there are now daily flights from most European cities, including regular flights ran by discount airlines, and flights from Menorca and Ibiza, though we would recommend taking the ferries as these are cheaper and not that much slower. Ferries also run from all the other Balearic islands, and from cities like Barcelona and Valencia. Once there however, the local transport is sparse at best, with many services not running on certain days so it’s best to hire a car in Mallorca. In high season however, it’s almost impossible to hire a car on the day, especially in the larger cities, so we suggest you use our advanced car hire comparison service for Mallorca to ensure that you not only get a great car rental deal, but also get exactly what you need all planned and booked before you arrive.
